LEHIGH VALLEY BRANCH
CONSTRUCTION & ABANDONMENT
The railroad’s half-mile Lehigh Valley Branch was constructed to provide connection with the Lehigh Valley Railroad at Roselle Park. The branch line was surveyed in October 1898 by J. Wallace Higgins. The LV constructed its own, short spur from its Roselle depot (later Roselle Park) to meet the New York & New Orange Railroad’s branch line where W. Webster Ave. was later constructed. The branch line was turned over to operation in early 1899.
In April 1988, the branch line was embargoed by the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway. The Roselle Park connection had fallen out of favor after an agreement with NJ Transit permitted crossing the Raritan Valley Line (former CNJ) to reach Staten Island Junction via Aldene. The Lehigh Valley Branch and Conrail interchange (former LV) were dismantled in January 1992.
