Crossing Route 22
One of the things that cracks me up was, since I was the new guy, I had to do these risky jobs. One of the riskiest jobs was when we had to cross Route 22 in Union with the speeder. There were these really high lights that we would turn on and they’d flash red. They were so high up that nobody saw them. I’d have to grab the flag - just a little post with a red flag on it. You had to slowly step out onto Route 22 and stop the traffic, taking your life in your hands. I’d be waving the flag and people would be honking at me. Harry would say, “Marsa, get the hell out there and stop the traffic!” I’d try and inch my way out waving this red flag and eventually I’d get out there. I hated flagging Route 22. You’d have to flag both sides because there were two sides to the crossing, separated in the middle by retail stores. So, it was just a hazard-and-a-half trying to get across Route 22 with our speeder.
